What to see
Three things carry this sight. If you are short on time, do them in this order.
- The Great Mosquea Ming courtyard complex that looks nothing like a mosque from outside
- Beiyuanmen streetlamb skewers, roujiamo, and the queues that mark the good stalls
- Xiyangshithe smaller lane behind, cheaper and where locals actually eat
Tickets and booking
How the ticket works, and what foreigners usually get wrong.
Before you buy
- Price. Street free. Great Mosque CNY 25.
- Booking. The Great Mosque is a working place of worship and closes to visitors during the five daily prayers — the notice is in Chinese only, so people walk in and get asked to leave. Avoid 13:00–14:00 on Fridays in particular.
- Payment. Most Chinese sights take WeChat Pay or Alipay only. Cash works at staffed windows but not at self-service machines; a licensed guide can pay on your behalf and settle with you at the end of the day.
Getting there and when to go
Inside the old city wall, 15 minutes west of the Bell Tower on foot. Cars cannot enter the lanes; the nearest drop-off is Guangji Street.
Quarter from 10:00 until late; busiest 18:00–22:00. Mosque 08:00–19:30.. The first hour after opening is the quietest — tour groups arrive around 09:30. Late afternoon gives better light but the main viewpoints start clearing people out, so shoot early if that is your priority.
Public transport reaches Muslim Quarter & Great Mosque, but connections and waiting times add up. With luggage, older travellers, or two sights in one day, a car and driver removes the guesswork.
