- Price. CNY 54 to walk the wall. Bike hire on top: CNY 45 for two hours, tandem CNY 90, deposit CNY 200.
- Booking. Cycling the loop takes longer than the 90 minutes most people plan: the surface is brick, the bikes are single-speed, and every gate has a ramp you walk up. Start at 16:00, finish at dusk, and you get the lanterns for free.
- Payment. Most Chinese sights take WeChat Pay or Alipay only. Cash works at staffed windows but not at self-service machines; a licensed guide can pay on your behalf and settle with you at the end of the day.
Getting there and when to go
Metro Line 2 to Yongningmen, exit D — the South Gate is directly above. Any of the four gates works as an entry; the South Gate has the most space and the best view.
08:00–22:00 (Apr–Oct), 08:00–19:00 (Nov–Mar). Last bike rental 90 minutes before closing.. The first hour after opening is the quietest — tour groups arrive around 09:30. Late afternoon gives better light but the main viewpoints start clearing people out, so shoot early if that is your priority.
Public transport reaches Ming city wall, but connections and waiting times add up. With luggage, older travellers, or two sights in one day, a car and driver removes the guesswork.
