What to see

Three things carry this sight. If you are short on time, do them in this order.

  • The 314 m single dropthe tallest uninterrupted waterfall in China
  • The viewing platform at the baseyou get wet, that is the point
  • The approach gorge40 minutes of boardwalk before you see the fall

Tickets and booking

How the ticket works, and what foreigners usually get wrong.

Before you buy

  • Price. Included in the Yuntai ticket (CNY 120 + CNY 60 shuttle).
  • Booking. The fall is fed by reservoir release in the dry season, so on some days it is a trickle. Ask at the gate whether it is running before committing two hours of walking — the staff know and will tell you.
  • Payment. Most Chinese sights take WeChat Pay or Alipay only. Cash works at staffed windows but not at self-service machines; a licensed guide can pay on your behalf and settle with you at the end of the day.

Getting there and when to go

Shuttle to the Tanpu Gorge stop, then 40 minutes walk in. Different valley from Red Stone Gorge; the shuttle connects them in 20 minutes.

06:30–18:00.. The first hour after opening is the quietest — tour groups arrive around 09:30. Late afternoon gives better light but the main viewpoints start clearing people out, so shoot early if that is your priority.

Public transport reaches Yuntai Waterfall, but connections and waiting times add up. With luggage, older travellers, or two sights in one day, a car and driver removes the guesswork.

The one thing that goes wrong

Jiaozuo local note

  • The fall is fed by reservoir release in the dry season, so on some days it is a trickle. Ask at the gate whether it is running before committing two hours of walking — the staff know and will tell you.

Yuntai Waterfall: questions travellers ask

When is the waterfall strongest?
July to September after rain, and during the May holiday when the reservoir is released. April and October can be disappointing.
How wet do I get?
The platform is 30 m from the base and the spray reaches it. A poncho costs CNY 10 at the entrance; a change of shirt is more useful.
