What to see

Three things carry this sight. If you are short on time, do them in this order.

  • Red Wall bamboo paththe photograph everyone comes for, best at 08:30
  • Liu Bei's tomba 12-metre mound behind the main hall, easily missed
  • Three Kingdoms gallerythe actual historical record, not the novel

Tickets and booking

How the ticket works, and what foreigners usually get wrong.

Before you buy

  • Price. Wuhou Shrine CNY 50. Jinli street free.
  • Booking. Go to the shrine at 08:00 when it opens, then Jinli afterwards. Jinli is a rebuilt Qing commercial street — pleasant, but 100% shops and snacks, and by 18:00 it is shoulder to shoulder. The shrine closes at 20:00 while Jinli runs late, so the sequence matters.
  • Payment. Most Chinese sights take WeChat Pay or Alipay only. Cash works at staffed windows but not at self-service machines; a licensed guide can pay on your behalf and settle with you at the end of the day.

Getting there and when to go

Metro Line 3 to Gaoshengqiao, exit D, 10 minutes walk. Or 15 minutes by car from the city centre; the shrine and Jinli share one entrance area.

Shrine 08:00–20:00 (summer), 08:00–18:30 (winter). Jinli 10:00–23:00.. The first hour after opening is the quietest — tour groups arrive around 09:30. Late afternoon gives better light but the main viewpoints start clearing people out, so shoot early if that is your priority.

Public transport reaches Wuhou Shrine & Jinli, but connections and waiting times add up. With luggage, older travellers, or two sights in one day, a car and driver removes the guesswork.

The one thing that goes wrong

Chengdu local note

  • Go to the shrine at 08:00 when it opens, then Jinli afterwards. Jinli is a rebuilt Qing commercial street — pleasant, but 100% shops and snacks, and by 18:00 it is shoulder to shoulder. The shrine closes at 20:00 while Jinli runs late, so the sequence matters.

Wuhou Shrine & Jinli: questions travellers ask

Is Jinli worth it?
As a photograph and a snack stop, yes for an hour. As "old Chengdu", no — it is a 2004 reconstruction. Widely-restored streets are the norm in China; Jinli at least does it well.
Do I need a guide for the Three Kingdoms story?
It helps. The English labels name the characters; they do not explain why Zhuge Liang matters. If you have read the novel, you will get more out of a guide here than almost anywhere else in Chengdu.
