What to see

Three things carry this sight. If you are short on time, do them in this order.

  • The four iron guardians3 m, Song dynasty, in the main gate
  • The 300-odd ancient cypressesthe largest concentration in China
  • The Taoist halls at the backworking, with almost no visitors

Tickets and booking

How the ticket works, and what foreigners usually get wrong.

Before you buy

  • Price. CNY 30.
  • Booking. This is the largest Taoist complex in central China and it is almost always empty, because everyone goes to Shaolin 10 minutes away. If you want a temple without crowds, this is the one.
  • Payment. Most Chinese sights take WeChat Pay or Alipay only. Cash works at staffed windows but not at self-service machines; a licensed guide can pay on your behalf and settle with you at the end of the day.

Getting there and when to go

4 km east of Dengfeng city, 10 minutes by car, on the way to Zhengzhou.

08:00–17:30.. The first hour after opening is the quietest — tour groups arrive around 09:30. Late afternoon gives better light but the main viewpoints start clearing people out, so shoot early if that is your priority.

Public transport reaches Zhongyue Temple, but connections and waiting times add up. With luggage, older travellers, or two sights in one day, a car and driver removes the guesswork.

The one thing that goes wrong

Dengfeng local note

  • This is the largest Taoist complex in central China and it is almost always empty, because everyone goes to Shaolin 10 minutes away. If you want a temple without crowds, this is the one.

Zhongyue Temple: questions travellers ask

Why is nobody here?
It has no kung fu and no film connection, so tour groups skip it. That is the reason to come — the scale is the same as Shaolin, the crowds are not.
Taoist or Buddhist?
Taoist, which is why the imagery is different — no Buddhas, different guardians, different architecture. If you have only seen Buddhist temples in China, worth an hour.
